Two key tenets of the freebird platform are accountable anonymity
By ensuring that ideas are liberated anonymously, we remove the barriers of fear and embarrassment as well as keep the focus on the idea itself rather than an established perception of the liberator. We significantly reduce the risks associated with anonymity by openly rating users, rewarding good actors and removing bad actors from the conversation.
The liberator of an idea can expose the idea for viewing and voting only to a geographic area that they are in at the time of submission. That area can be selected from a number of known areas or custom drawn. Consequently, a voter (any user) can only see and therefore vote on ideas that have been exposed for a geographic area that they are in. As a user moves around the country and the world, they will see and be able to vote on ideas for those geographic areas.
How do we do this?
Freebird will never ask you for personally identifiable information. Entering personal information in the Freebird platform may compromise your anonymity. When the application is installed, a unique and randomly generated ID is created for this installation of the application and stored in the iOS Keychain. All of your activity is anonymously associated with that profile so that:
- you can follow ideas that you have created
- you can follow ideas that you have engaged with in some form or fashion (e.g. voting, bookmarking, etc.)
- we can prominently display ideas that you are likely to be interested in based on your engagement history.
- you can establish an anonymous reputation within the community via points and related percentile of user rankings, which are awarded for proper behavior and regular usage of the system.
At any point, you may choose to clean a device of all Freebird activity associated with the device. While your device will be cleaned immediately, for accountability purposes, it will take up to 7 days before all of your activity is permanently erased from Freebird servers. When you clean a device, you cannot escape your prior Freebird transgressions. We remove the link to all past activity but transfer the high level user rating to your new Freebird ID. Your new Freebird ID is not linked to any specific inappropriate activity, however, it will still be associated with the fact that some type of inappropriate activity occurred on a specific date. This keeps users from being able to use the Clean Freebird function as a way to keep them immune from suspension or expulsion that may be related to continued misuse of the application.
Since Freebird is an anonymous platform, there is no account for you to use to login to another device and see your activity. If you own and regularly use multiple devices and would like to synchronize all your Freebird activity across them, you can use the Device Linking feature. The device used to link to another device will lose all of its prior activity (except for high-level transgression summary), will have visibility into all activity of the other device prior to linking and will share all new activity of the other device while linked. This linkage can be broken at any time by cleaning the device or linking it to another device. The Linking function is ONLY for the purpose of a single individual having convenient access to their Freebird history across the devices that they personally own. It is NOT to be used for linking to the devices of others.
When commenting on an idea, you will be assigned a random user name. That username is persisted throughout that idea only. As you participate in different ideas, you will be assigned a different username for each idea. This limits the possibility of another user figuring out who you are.
Freebird requires access to your location in order to function. We need to know your location to show and allow you to create ideas for areas you’re in and places you’re nearby. We realize the sensitivity of this information and only use your location data in the ways outlined below.
- When creating an idea, Freebird uses your location to determine which geographic areas you can select. The location stored on Freebird servers is abstracted to the entirety of the area you select.
- When viewing ideas, Freebird uses your location to determine which idea cards to display based on the areas you are in. No location data is stored on Freebird servers.
- When voting on an idea, your location is abstracted to a predetermined five square mile grid overlaid on top of the area for the idea.
No other actions within the application access your location data including but not limited to:
- Commenting on an idea
- Bookmarking an idea
- Flagging an idea
- Ignoring an idea
- Sharing an idea
- Viewing an idea
Background Location Services
Freebird requests the ability to monitor your location while the app is not in-use for the purpose of occasionally sending you notifications about ideas in your current area which match your interests. This can be modified within iOS settings by changing location access from “Always” to “While Using the App.”
Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Freebird
Freebird may send push notifications to the User as described in the Background Location Services section. This can be configured in the Notifications section of iOS settings.
Freebird collects non identifiable usage information about how people access and use the service. These services allow Freebird to monitor the use and behavior of its components so its performance, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting can be improved. The types of information collected include:
- Device type
- Operating system
- Preferred language
- Network service provider
- Country and city
- Error messages
- Freebird usage duration
- Freebird screen viewing sequence
- Freebird version installed on the device
Hosting and Backend Infrastructure
These services have the purpose of hosting data and files that enable this Application to run and be distributed as well as to provide a ready-made infrastructure to run specific features or parts of this Application. Some of these services work through geographically distributed servers, making it difficult to determine the actual location where Data is stored.
